Journey On!

As part of the lower school Journey On celebration our class was recorded reading the book The Diary of a Spider.  The students worked hard to read with expression and thoughtful intonation, to use stress appropriately to engage the reader, and to think about where natural pauses should be. Four Mile House

We had a wonderful time at Four Mile House yesterday.  The students were spilt into two groups and experienced 5 different activities.  In the one room schoolhouse, the students learned how different lessons were in 1879.  They had to have a hygiene inspection before they entered class and had to write with chalk on slate boards.  The students enjoyed panning for gold and were very successful! We found out that doing laundry in 1879 was quite challenging!  Then after all that hard work, there was still chickens to be fed and boardwalks to be swept.  We had lots of fun playing pioneer games but found walking on the stilts was hard to master.  Finally we got to look around the oldest house in Denver and learn about its history.  We all decided we are happy that we didn't live in pioneer times!

Trip!

I hope the students have talked about the fun activities they have been doing with Mrs. Nyberg this week.  Carey has created a curriculum unit called Denver, Then and Now.  This week the students have been learning about the Arapahoe tribe.  Next week they will be learning about the pioneers.  As part of this work, we will be visiting Four Mile House on Monday morning.  I will post photos on our reutrn!

Second Grade Music Concert

I hope you were able to join us this morning for the second grade concert.  If not, don't worry, there will be a repeat performance at 2:20 this afternoon.  The students sang and played beautifully. It is obvious that they have practiced hard in their music lessons.  They felt both proud and relieved after the performance this morning, and have been talking about ways to make the afternoon performance even better!
